Ross Carter King, named for her grandmother, Nellie Ross Bailey, died quite unexpectedly early Tuesday morning of a sudden illness. Ross, age 87, was born in Knoxville, TN to Lorraine Whitney "Nick" Carter and Louise Bailey Carter of Greenville, SC. Ross graduated from Greenville High School and regularly drove to Greenville to meet for lunch with her remaining classmates from the Class of 1943. She attended Hollins College, Roanoke, VA and graduated from Furman University, Greenville, SC. She moved to Atlanta in the 1950s where she met her husband, Alexander Campbell King, Jr. of Atlanta and Flat Rock, NC, who survives. Ross died a month and a half before their 55th wedding anniversary.
Her other surviving family include: Clifford King Harbin (The Revd Dr. J Derek Harbin) and their three children, Miles, Mitchell and Clare of Portsmouth, VA; AC King, III and his daughters, Lauren and Lydia of Muscogee, OK; and Allison Pettit and her daughter Laura Bryce both of Chicago and son, Bob, of Ithaca, NY; and her sisters, Faith Inglis (David "Cooler") formerly of Atlanta, GA, now residing in Clarksville, GA and Louise Mondy, formerly of Richmond, VA, now residing in Savannah, GA and her brother-in-law, Charles W King of Atlanta. She is also survived by four nephews and their spouses and two nieces and their families, totaling 7 great-nephews and great-nieces.
Her professional career began by working for Harris-Upham Stock Brokerage in Greenville and Atlanta, the Atlanta Merchandise Mart, and as a realtor for Barton & Ludwig Realtors, (Buckhead Office). She was active in the Junior League and then the Junior League Sustaining Transfer group (LST), the Planters Garden Club, serving as President in 1971-72, and a member of The Nineteenth Century History Class, organized in 1885; and was a docent at the High Museum. Ross was an active member of several bridge clubs and a regular attendee at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra concerts for more than 50 years. Ross was also on the board of the family firm, Penland-Bailey LLC in Mitchell County, NC. The "feisty" Ross we know and love was a great traveler, a good friend, and was extremely active up until her admission to the hospital on Wednesday.
Ross was a faithful member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church (435 Peachtree St, Downtown Atlanta) since 1959 where she was known by all as "the beautiful lady who wears the beautiful hats." She was a regular lector and usher, a Daughter of the King, and a member of the Property Committee and the Flower Guild, which was her greatest passion. Her Requiem Eucharist, conducted by The Revd Dan Matthews, will be held there at 3:00 pm on Thursday, April 10th, with burial at St. John in the Wilderness Churchyard, Flat Rock, NC on Friday, 2:00 pm.
