Richard as he was known by his family and friends was born April 6, 1942 to Carroll and Martha Gregg Burnham in rural Dallas County, Iowa. He was raised in Adel, Iowa and graduated from Adel High School with the class of 1962. While in high school, Richard worked at Tiny's Horse'n Buggy Café and continued his employment there for 12 years before being employed at McDonalds in Clive where he worked for 10 years before being employed for the Adel Meals on Wheels program. Richard enjoyed working with the Meals on Wheels program, going to the Iowa Sidney Rodeo, loved watching and being around horses and spending time with his family and friends. Richard lived all of his life in Adel before moving to an apartment in Dallas Center where he was living before coming to the Stuart Care Center in December.

Preceding Richard in death are his parents, Carroll and Martha Burnham and one brother, Lavern Dean and his wife Georgia Burnham.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his nieces and nephews, Carroll (Enola) Jenkins of Adel, Iowa, Joe (Sherry) Burnham of Northwest, Ohio, Tom (Susan) Jenkins, of Earlham, Iowa, Connie (Bill Heckman) Baumgardner of Menlo, Iowa , Joyce Ruvoldt of Des Moines, Iowa, Cheryl (James) Jorgenson of Lorimor, Iowa, Judy (friend Corey) Burnham of Des Moines and DeEtta (Kirk) McDole of Winterset, Iowa and a host of great nieces, nephews and friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
