Steve Karas Jr. of Churchville passed away Monday October, 22 at Upper Chesapeake Hospital in Bel Air after a short illness. He was 97 years old. Born in Chios, Greece on April 15, 1915 to Steve and Irene Karamihalis he was raised in Andros, Greece before immigrating to the United States in the late 1930's. From 1942 until 1945 he served in the US Army in North Africa, Italy and France. After World War II he spent 40 years in the restaurant business as co owner of the New Ideal Diner in Aberdeen and the Williamsburg Inn in White Marsh. In addition, he was President of B. Michael and Sons which owned and managed rental properties in Aberdeen and Havre de Grace. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Mary Hondras Karas, his parents, and a sister, Mary Agapis. He is survived by three sons: Peter and wife Kim, John and wife Belinda and Michael and wife Linda as well as 7 grandchildren: Bethany, Aimee, Andy, Scott, Katie, Steven and Daphne. Mr. Karas was a long time member of the Annunciation Cathedral in Baltimore and is currently a member of Saints Mary Magdalene and Markella Greek Orthodox Church in Darlington. He was also a member of the Aberdeen VFW, the Aberdeen Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. A viewing will be held on Friday October 26 at Tarring Cargo Funeral Home, 333 S. Parke St. in Aberdeen from 2-4pm and from 7-9pm. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10am at Saints Mary Magdalene and Markella Greek Orthodox Church at 3714 Dublin Rd., Darlington, Md. Entombment will be at Harford Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Saints Mary Magdalene and Markella Greek Orthodox Church, P.O. Box 1575, BelAir, MD 21014.
