Dick Gravatt, 81, a lifetime resident of the Elma area, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014, peacefully at his home surrounded by family and friends.
Dick was born on March 27, 1932 to Austin and Gladys (Bliss) Gravatt in Elma, WA and grew up in White Star, WA with his two brothers, Donald and Merle Gravatt. He attended Elma schools and graduated from Elma High School in 1951. On May 16, 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Edna Louise Schoonover, who preceded him in death in 2004.
Dick retired in 1990 after 38 years from the Grays Harbor County Road Department, working his way up from running a road grader and heavy machinery, to finally retiring as the Superintendent. He also was a member of the Elma Volunteer Fire Department retiring after 25 years of service, and an active member of the Elma Eagles Auxiliary #1440 for 47 years. Dick also served the citizens of Elma as a Council Member for two full terms from 1978-1986.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, camping at the beach, digging clams, golfing, fishing, and travelling to Reno, Nevada.
Dick is survived by his three children, Richard Jr. and his wife, Rosie (McNutt) Gravatt, Carol and her husband, Ronald Davidson, and Ronald and his significant other, Carolyn Howell; all of Elma and his eight grandchildren, Ryan (Viva) Cristelli, Amy Cristelli, Justin (Laura) Cristelli, Kristi (Mike) Kendrena, Kari (Todd) Barton, Kim (Dustin) Adams, and 16 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Donald (Audrey) Gravatt, numerous nieces and nephews and his "Earth Angel" Jami (Ted) Wollen. In addition to his wife, Edna, he was preceded in death by his parents, Austin and Gladys Gravatt and brother, Merle Gravatt.
The family suggests memorial contributions in memory of Dick Gravatt to Elma Eagles Fighting Back Relay for Life, c/o Shawnie Rakevich 104 Valentine Court, Elma WA 98541. A service will commence at 11 am on Friday March 14, 2014 at the Satsop Cemetery with a Celebration of Life at the Eagles Club in Elma immediately following.
