Leona J. Otey, age 92, of Bloomington, formerly of Peoria, passed away on February 20, 2017, at Luther Oaks Retirement Community in Bloomington.

She was born June 25, 1924, on a farm in Bachelor, MO to Fred E. and Bertha Lou (Livingston) Garr. She married Felix H. Otey on September 30, 1950, in Moberly, MO. He passed away on May 12, 2004.

She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Barbara Jane, her parents and 11 brothers and sisters. Leona was an identical twin and her sister Leota J. Strickland passed away March 23, 2010.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis (Kathy) Otey of Glen Ellyn, IL and Duane (Melody) Otey of Bloomington, IL; 5 grandchildren, Steven, Lori, Emily, Austin and Caitlin; and 4 great-grandchildren, Skylar, Trevor, Riley and Kyleigh. She is also survived by her brother Ervin "Pete" Garr of Brookfield, MO, sister-in-law Rose Otey of Melber, KY, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She graduated from Keytesville High School in 1945 and earned a BS degree in Home Economics from Missouri University in 1949. She taught high school Home Economics in Missouri. She later worked for Peoria Public Schools Dist. 150. She was also a long time member of the Home Economics Association.

Leona and her husband married for 54 years. They were members of Dayton Avenue Baptist Church, where she worked in the nursery and taught Sunday school for many years.

Graveside services will be on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 11am at Parkview Cemetery in Peoria. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital of Memphis.
