Evelyn J. French, 96, of Peoria passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Saturday, August 20, 2016.
She was born on June 2, 1920 in Toluca, IL to Clinton and Maude (Busroe) Gessel. She married Grover C. French on Februrary, 28, 1942 in Peoria, IL. He preceded her in death in 1987.
Evelyn is survived by her four children, Roger French of Washington, IL, Gary (Linda) French of Peoria, IL, Cheryl (Barry) Bowen of Pottsboro, TX and Jacqueline French of Washington, IL. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Jennifer Grenz of FL, Clinton Martinez and Joel Martinez, both of MI and Jeffrey Ledford of NC. In addition she has four great-grandchildren and another on the way. She is also survived by a brother, Raymond (Phyllis) Gessel of Peoria.
Evelyn was a woman guided by her strong faith in God. She was a longtime member of Averyville Baptist Church. Until recent years she was active in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Friendship House Senior Club. Everyone was always amazed by her upbeat spirit and unwavering optimism even in times of personal adversity. Like her father, she never knew a stranger. She loved dogs. Some of her fondest memories were of the travels she took with her husband in the winters after his retirement and all of the great friends they made.
Services will be held on Friday, August 26, 2016 at 10am The Wilton Mortuary in Peoria. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2016 from 5pm to 7pm, also at the funeral home. Rev. David Coyle will be officiating. Burial will be at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria. Memorial donations can be made to her church or to the charity of the donor's choice.
