Peoria Heights--Erskine C. "Chappy" Chapman, 94, of Peoria Heights passed away peacefully at 6:25 a.m. on Dec. 24, 2014 at home.

Chappy was born in Huntington, West Virginia on April 4, 1920 to Charles C. and Hazel (Weekly) Chapman. He married Helen Naisen on November 27, 1948 in Peoria, Il. She preceded him in death on December 17, 2005.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, brothers Tommy, Charles, Bill and sister, Betty Durfee; sister and brother-in-law Nadine and Hugh Martin and nephew, Jim Alexander.

Surviving are two sons and a daughter, Richard (Kathy) Chapman of Peoria, Il. and Dr. David Chapman of Springfield, Il., Janet (Ray) Lees of Peoria, Il. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Christie (Brian) Brendal, Chelsea (Mike) Hoffman; Collin, Elizabeth and Julia Chapman; Judd, Grant (Jessica) and Preston Lees and three great–grandchildren, Noely and Jacob Brendal and Grace Hoffman. His brother, Jack Chapman of Raleigh, NC, also survives as do his sister and brother-in-law Nellie and Russ Bass of Morton, Il., nieces Joan (Al) Sontag and Jane (Rod) Getz both of East Peoria, Il.

He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 1942 and was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Chappy was a combat veteran having served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European and North African Theaters from 1942 through 1945. He enlisted as a 2nd Lt., 5th Army Combat Engineers. He received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

Chappy retired from Caterpillar in 1985 after a distinguished 40 year career. He was highly respected by Caterpillar employees, dealers and customers throughout the world engendering lifetime relationships and friendships. At the time of his retirement, he was serving as an Executive Vice President and member of the Board of Directors with responsibilities for global marketing of Caterpillar products and services. Chappy earned progressively responsible positions in marketing and sales during his career at CAT. He served as Vice President and President of Caterpillar Overseas, S.A. in Geneva, Switzerland; Vice President of the U.S. Commercial Division and, later, as the Vice President of Global Marketing. He also served as a director of many Caterpillar operating units.

He was a Director of the Beloit Corporation, President of the International Road Educational Foundation, Director and Executive Committee member of the International Road Federation, Director of Prospect National Bank of Peoria and served on the Board of Governors of the Country Club of Peoria.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the Wilton Mortuary in Peoria. Cremation will be accorded.

Memorials may be made to Methodist Hospice Services or a charity of the donor's choice.
