Peoria-Ellen C. Jones, 99, of Peoria passed away at 1:15 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2014 at Washington Christian Village, in Washington, where she had been a resident since July, 2013.
Ellen had resided at the Oakwoods Apartments and at 740 W. Joan Ct. in Peoria for 33 years.
She was born in Peoria on November 16, 1914 to Charles F. and Pearl R. Phelan Slater.
Surviving are one daughter, Shirley Mitzelfelt of Washington; one granddaughter, Rosemary (Bruce) Ekhoff of Peoria; two great-grandchildren, Luke Ekhoff of Groveland, Natalie (Andrew) Debelak of Kansas City, Missouri and three great-great-grandchildren, Hudson, Aiden and Cora Debelak. She was quite proud of five generations of females in her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son-in-law, Albert Mitzelfelt and she was the last surviving child of 18 children.
Ellen worked at Proctor Community Hospital for 25 years in the Histology Department of the Laboratory retiring in January, 1980 when she became part of the Service Auxilary and Retiree Club.
After retiring she worked for the Foster Grandparent Program starting in 1985 and nine of those years she was at Women Strength in Peoria. She received the Jean Tucker Award in 1992 for services with children at Women Strength. After her eyesight failed, she no longer worked with the children individually but was still a member of the Foster Grandparents Advisory Council beginning in 1996.
Ellen attended Bethany Baptist Church in Edwards.
Grandma's unwavering love and devotion to her daughter Shirley and granddaughter Rose and to all family and friends who knew her will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 21, 2014 at The Wilton Mortuary in Peoria with Pastor Fred Laugherty officiating. Visitation will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens.
Memorials may be made in Ellen's memory to Youth for Christ or Washington Christian Village.
