PEORIA – Jackie L. Vernier, 74, of Peoria, died at 12:55 a.m., Thursday, July 26, 2012, at his residence.

He was born September 17, 1937, in Waldron, Michigan, to Rex and Rosie Schoonover Vernier. He married Janette L. King on December 2, 1955, in Morenci, Michigan.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janette; his children, Crystal (Howard) Love of Peoria Heights, Nick (Kay) Vernier of Mounds, Oklahoma, Saundra Griffis of Bethany, Oklahoma, Debra Schaffner of Peoria Heights, Mitchell (Shelley) Vernier of Colorado Springs, Colorado; his grandsons, Jeffery Love, Travis Vernier, Troy Vernier, Matthew Griffis, Isaac Griffis, Drew Schaffner, Derek Schaffner; his granddaughters, Stacie Vernier, Hannah Griffis, Rachel Griffis, Alyssa Vernier, Jessica Vernier; his great-grandson, Bently Vernier; his brothers, Duane (Janet) Vernier of Bethany, Oklahoma, Devon (Ginny) Vernier of Morenci, Michigan; his sister, Darlene King of Bryan, Ohio; close family friend, Vicky Craig and her daughter, Heather and his beloved dog, Mitzy Anna.

He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Kenneth Punches.

He served his nation as a member of the Michigan National Guard.

He received his bachelor of theology from Olivet Nazarene University and served his Lord as a minister in Eufaula, Oklahoma, Baxter Springs, Kansas and served as an interim pastor in several central Illinois churches.

After retiring from the ministry, he moved to Maple Lawn Homes in Eureka as head of maintenance.

He then worked for The Association for the Developmentally Disabled of Woodford County (ADDWC) in Eureka, where he found his greatest joy in serving others, after leaving the ministry.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July, 31, 2012, at Peoria First Church of the Nazarene. Pastor Jim Book will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, July 30, 2012, at Peoria First Church of the Nazarene, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday morning. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.

Memorials, in Jackie's name, may be made to Peoria Christian School or ADDWC in Eureka.
