Gene Welch, 81, of Somerville went to his heavenly home on Sunday, January 17, 2016. Service will be 12pm, Saturday, January 23, at First Baptist Church of Somerville, with interment following at Oaklawn Cemetery.
Gene was born on June 24, 1934 in Somerville, Texas. He completed school in Somerville and went to Blinn College in Brenham.
He married Marilyn Harper in May of 1953 and was the father of Michael Gene, Charles Anthony, Bob Allen and Wendy. His pride and joy were his grandchildren, Amanda Inglehart and husband Tanner, Jason Welch, Emily Welch, Marilyn Welch, Josh Welch, Sean Fall, Cory Fall, Zachary Magnuson, Hannah Magnuson Pierson, Autumn Magnuson, James Welch, Misty Welch Wolf, Meagan Welch Scanlon, Beau Welch, great-grandchildren, Cesili Inglehart, Grace Inglehart, Evie Inglehart, Jillian Inglehart, Kyle Fall, Gregory Fall, William Pierson, Brenden Wolf, Cortney Wolf, Savannah Scanlon and Rilee Scanlon.
Starting at the Somerville Tie and Treating Plant at the age of 20, he worked his way up to the mechanical foreman under the direction of Mr. Bill Jackson and Robert Curtis Houston who was the plant superintendent.
He learned many Jobs while working there, many on his own time and when the last superintendent, Sam Barkley retired, they gave Gene his position. He took much pride in his job, loved and appreciated all the employees. His special working buddy was Gary Curling. Who helped him keep up the slack. He was the secretary of the union many years and enjoyed representing his friends when the occasion arose.
He was the brother-in-law of Kermit and Jann Harper Nancy Welch. He was also the beloved uncle to Claudette and Mark Brown, and Ashley, Andrew, Angeline, and Paul Escamilla, and nephews Lane, Ryder, Rodger, and David Welch, and also Laing, Scott, Kelly, Blair, and Mathew Welch. He was the Father-in-law to Mindy White Welch & Stacie Lalonde Welch. He was a special friend to Poochie and Maurice Woods and Chuck and Myra Starks.
He was on the city council for a few years, then became the mayor, and took great pride in that position. He loved Somerville with all his heart and was loyal to a fault. Honesty and integrity was his lifestyle. He believed in dong an honest day's work and providing for his family. He did both well.
He loved to play golf and did on a regular basis. His favorite place to play was copperas Hollow Country Club in Caldwell. He made many friends there that lasted a lifetime. He loved to fish and hunt and kept our freezers full of venison and filleted fish. His two special buddies were Cye Woods and Chuck Starks. I would call them, because they never did anything without an incident or two. Their heated debates over politics would get out of hand, they would have to stop on the side of the highway to work it out before they got to the Country club. But they remained loyal buddies for life.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Somerville all his life and looked forward to the monthly prayer Breakfast on Saturday mornings. The church held a special place in his heart because his Grandfather Bro. C. A. Ray was the pastor there in the 20's and 30's. He was in charge of the annual Gem Stew, along with his wife, until health issues became a problem. He also was the head of the annual fish frying team many years until recently. He and Chuck Starks went over many years to thaw out and cut up the fish making sure it was thawed correctly.
He deer hunted in Fredericksburg around 40 years with the best group of men on earth. They came and went, and some passed away, leaving a void, but the old hands remained at the same camp until a few short years ago when they sold out to new owners. He was a good man and appreciated by many.
He is proceeded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Welch and Bro. and Mrs. C. A. Ray, his parents, Clyde and Eunice Welch, a baby brother, Charles Henry Welch, older brother, Clyde Ray Welch, grandson, Josh Welch, sister-in-law, Nancy R. Welch and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
