The Funeral Mass for Mary Rita (Fontes) Garbs, 91, of Caldwell are set for 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 24, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Caldwell. Interment will follow at New Tabor Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, September 23, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:30, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell. Mrs. Garbs passed away September 20, 2014 at St. Joseph's Regional Health Center in Bryan, Texas.

Mary Rita (Fontes) Garbs was born December 27, 1922 to Victor Fontes and Margaret Catherine May Fontes in Taunton, Massachusetts.

Mary was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Caldwell, as well as St. Mary's choir, the Rosary Society, and the Altar Society. She served as Cub Scout Leader, Girl Scout Leader, and was a former member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Mary was assistant activity director at Leisure Lodge Nursing Home of Caldwell, a home care provider for many Caldwell residents and retired from Keller Aluminum Manufacturing Company of Caldwell, Texas. Mary loved cooking and sewing. She was an excellent cook and her specialties were homemade squirrel gravy and various jellies and pies. She was a dedicated housewife, mother, grandmother and was "Nana" to every child who ever met her.

Mary is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Allen Garbs and Grace Kramer of Caldwell, Thomas & Michelle Garbs of Tomball, Robert Garbs of Sealy, John Garbs of Houston; daughters, Suzanne Skrabanek of Caldwell, Mary Lou Hein of Caldwell; grandchildren, Roxanne Bryan, Gary Hein, Jr., Brian Garbs, Kirsten Garbs, Kelsey Garbs, Thomas Garbs, Jr., Anthony Garbs, 12 great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Gladys Garbs of Caldwell, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Aldolph Garbs, her parents, son-in-law, Edward L. "Happy" Skrabanek, granddaughter Rhonda Skrabanek Trahan, one brother, Lawrence Fontes, and sister, Georgiana Arruda.

Pallbearers will be Gary Hein, Jr., Brian Garbs, Thomas Garbs, Jr., Marty Bryan, Jeff Garbs, Greg Garbs, and Kenneth Charanza, with Colton Tranan, Anthony Garbs, and Jacob Garbs serving as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be given to St. Mary's Catholic Church Choir, Altar Society, Scholarship Fund or Rosary Society.
