Roger W. Vars, age 80, of Easton, beloved husband of 55 years of Rose (Kucsera) Vars, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 22, 2012, at Bridgeport Hospital. Born in Bridgeport on September 22, 1931, Roger had been an Easton resident for 40 years. He was a graduate of Central High School, Class of 1950, and attended the University of Bridgeport and Housatonic Community College. Roger served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958. He was a professional mason and member of the union and later in life taught masonry at Bullard Havens Technical High School for 17 years. Roger was an avid gardener and delighted in growing flowers, especially orchids. He was a member of the Greater Bridgeport Men's Garden Club, where he received the "Gardener of the Year" award in 2010. Also, he was a member of the Connecticut Orchid Society and a founder of the Fairfield County Orchid Society. He also loved boating and was a life member of the Pequonnock Yacht Club and a member of the Germania Schwaben Club. An active long-time member of the Unity Hill United Church of Christ, he served as an Elder and Deacon and was Superintendant of the Sunday School for many years. He and his wife Rose loved to travel the world and visited over 50 countries together. Survivors in addition to his wife include three beloved children, David Vars and his wife Radhika of Lake Hiawatha, NJ, Kathy Yalof and her husband Clay of Cheshire, and Sherri Miller and her husband Alan of Rowayton; a brother, William Vars, Jr. of Stratford; a sister, June Rutkowski of Trumbull; six cherished grandchildren, Samantha, Curran, Ashley, Rowan, Michele and Eric; and several nieces and nephews. A loving husband, father, and grandfather with a great sense of humor, he will truly be missed. A funeral service will be held Monday, February 27, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at Unity Hill United Church of Christ with the Rev. M. Todd Shipley officiating. Interment will follow in Lawncroft Cemetery, Fairfield. Friends may call Sunday from 3-7 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield.
