James P. McCullough, 84, of Galion, died Monday, May 16, 2011 at Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, surrounded by his family after a three month illness.

Born April 29, 1927 in Mansfield, he was the son of the late Mace P. McCullough and Mary (Skinner) McCullough Cochran. He married Fern J. (Swineford) McCullough Oct. 24, 1953 and she preceded him in death July 10, 2001.

Jim was born and raised in Mansfield and attended Madison High School. He was a World War II United States Navy veteran, stationed in Honolulu, where he was a driver for General Douglas McArthur.

Jim lived in the Lucas area prior to moving to Galion in 1966 when he began working for Galion Community Hospital. His career there spanned 30 years before he retired in 1995 as Supervisor of Sterile Processing and Distribution. He was an avid golfer and a long-time member of Valley View Golf Course, First Lutheran Church and American Legion Scarbrough Post 243 in Galion. Jim was a life-member of Galion Elk's Lodge 1191 and will be remembered for his "outragous golfing attire"! Jim was a Cleveland Indians fan and his family noted "he would have enjoyed watching them defeat the Kansas City Royals 19-2 the night he died". He and his companion Pat, enjoyed each other's company and spent recent winters together in Florida.

Jim's reflection on life was simply: As life goes on, We cannot know why some must stay and some must go; God's plan for us is his alone. He guides us 'til he calls us home ... Author unknown.

Surviving is his loving family, including his son and daughter-in-law, Mace and Barbara McCullough, his daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Joe Kokiko; two grandchildren, Katie (Jeremy) Guy and Colin McCullough and two great-granddaughters, Elizabeth and Emily Guy, all of Galion; his special friend, Pat Brumenschenkel of Vermilion and his extended family, including his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Harris and his step-father, James Cochran.
