Thomas was born to Lucille Dickerson Artis and the late Marion (Buddy) Artis on February 6, 1944 in Wayne County, North Carolina. He attended Wayne County Public Schools and graduated from Norwayne School in 1962.
He moved to New Jersey shortly after graduation. He was employed by Avis & Hertz Rent-A-Car, Just Exterminators and UMD Hospital. He then became self-employed with Artis Pest Control.
Thomas had a great love for music and enjoyed singing and playing a guitar with his sons. His voice was often thought by many to be reminiscent of the great "Sam Cooke!" He had an outgoing sense of humor and was often fun to be around.
Thomas united with Faith Temple #1 Original Free Will Baptist Church, East Orange, New Jersey on January 24, 1993 under the leadership of Bishop L.N. Forbes. He was a former member of the Male Chorus. He frequently fellowshipped with Pleasant Grove Baptist Church of Newark, NJ along with his wife.
His memories will forever linger in the hearts of his wife: Margaret Artis of Hillside, NJ; his mother: Mrs. Lucille Artis of Fremont, NC; two sisters: Mrs. Rena A. Farmer of Chattanooga, Tenn. And Ms. Mildred Artis of Newark, NJ; his five children whom he affectionately nicknamed: Aloha-Pooh, Tommy-Lightning, Ronny-Skipper, Reggie-Flash and Felecia-Baby Girl. (27) grandchildren: Tiffani, Jamal, Tony, Tara, Tyrell, Brittani, Tevin, Reggie, Amyra, Mya, Kiyana, Yasmina, Najala, Imani, Briana, India, Marcel, Nadir, Issata, Ibn, Samira, Chynnah, Anthony, Marcel, Richard, Theodore and Chamekia. (5) great-grands: La'Nya, Aiyana, Jeremiah, Rayana and Ja'ziyah; one daughter-in-law: Kecia Artis; one son-in-law: Eric Waters; (4) sister-in-laws: Paulette James, Linda Albert, Donna Green and Deborah Green all of Newark, NJ; (2) Brother-in-laws: Kevin (Gwen) Green of Bayonne, NJ and Allen (Elaine) Green of Newark, NJ; (3) aunts: Mrs. Mildred Howard, Baltimore, MD, Mrs. Eva Smith and Mrs. Lillian Artis, Wilson, NC; a special special friend: Ollie Ellison of Newark, NJ and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Tyreese.
