Charlotte Luella Phillips Ryan passed away on October 16, 2013 at the age of 84. Charlotte was born in Winsted, Connecticut on June 10th, 1929, the daughter of Evelyn and Arthur Phillips. Charlotte graduated from The Gilbert School in 1947 and traveled with her beloved uncle Frank Hewitt to Istanbul, Turkey where she studied at Robert College and the American College for Girls for the year. She then proceeded to spend three years at Oberlin College and finished her studies at UCONN. She married her first husband, Theodore Vaill Jr. in 1956, with whom she had three daughters. Following her teaching career at the Pleasant Valley Elementary School, she owned and operated the Corner Book Store in Winsted for ten years. She loved both reading and learning, and she dedicated her life to the pursuit of both. Following the book store, Charlotte volunteered at the Beardlsey and Memorial Library in Winsted until her permanent move to Damariscotta, Maine in 1999, where she resided until last summer. She had previously been a summer resident in the same town since 1988. She is predeceased by her daughter Betsy Vaill and her second husband Emile H. Ryan. She is survived by Mary Susan Vaill of Torrington CT, Katie Vaill and Keith Sleeper of Norfolk CT and grandson, Tyler Vaill Franconi and Dr. Candace Rice of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Funeral Services will be held at the Winsted United Methodist Church, 630 Main St. in Winsted on Tuesday, October 22st at 11am with a brief reception to follow. There will be a private burial service for the family. Contributions should be made in lieu of flowers to the American Cancer Society.
