Morton Reeber 1932-2024
Morton Reeber was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 23, 1932. He graduated from Brooklyn Polytechnic High School and Columbia University with a degree in Physics. After service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Mort joined the IBM research division in New York where he worked for 34 years until his retirement, contributing to the development of early computer chip technology. Mort found his lifelong passion for photography as a teen while visiting a neighborhood camera store. He loved the beauty, power, history, and intricate engineering of photographic and optical devices. He even took an occasional picture. Over nearly eight decades of collecting and repairing cameras, lenses and optical equipment, he became a respected and well-known resource to grateful collectors and photographers. Shortly after moving to Weston, Missouri in 2001, Mort became co-proprietor of Sundance Gallery and Mort’s Classic Cameras, where, for twenty years, he enjoyed sharing his collection, stories, and encyclopedic knowledge to the delight of those who sought him out or just wandered in. Over his life, Mort inspired two generations of scientists, engineers, and artists by his example of dedication to curiosity and excellence. He was soothed and inspired by music and nature. Mort is survived by his wife of 68 years, two daughters, two sons-in-law, two grandsons, many nieces and nephews, and friends who loved him. A celebration of life will be scheduled in the future. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Nature Conservancy or another artistic, cultural, scientific, or environmental organization. Mort was a member of the Missouri Cremation Service. Online guestbook and obituary at www.missouricremation.com.
