Joseph Charles Borek was born in Hoquiam, Washington to Karol John Borek and Bernice Pelzar Borek, both Roman Catholic, in 1926. He lost his mother at age two and was raised by his father along with his sister Sophie in the small fishing town. His father passed and he and his sister were then raised by his aunts. After high school, opportunity knocked to move to sunny, Southern California. He said it was his fate or absolute destiny to move to Long Beach, CA in 1946 to help run the FOX Imperial Theater. Later, he would be promoted and offered a management position at the Fox Theater in San Pedro, CA. There he met (his fate) the love of life his life, Anna Rose Guglielmo while working together at the theater. He instantly fell in love and they were married six months later December 27,1952. During the Korean War, he was drafted and stationed at Fort Ord in the 63d Infantry Regiment where he served as their Postmaster for over 4000 men, and awarded a Superior ranking by his Commander. Once the war was over, he was hired as an Engineer at General Motors in South Gate, CA and retired with the company after 30 years of committed service. Retirement was quite boring for Joe, so he worked as a bookkeeper for Fleitz Brothers in the San Pedro Marina for over 10 years and fulfilled his need to interact with people, keep his mind active and gaze out to the beautiful ocean and all the boats. After 17 years of marriage and many prayers to finally have a baby to complete their family, daughter, Carrie Ann was born in 1970 and the three of them remained in town until Anna’s passing in 2004. Joe moved to Seal Beach, CA and lived with daughter Carrie Ann & son-in law, Tim for 13 years, then evently moved back to Rancho Palos Verdes, CA for the remainder of his life. Papa Joe will be known for his kindness, big heart, loyalty, strong work ethic, his artistic talents of painting, drawing and creating something out of nothing and being able to solve problems with such a hopeful attitude. He loved his family with such devotion, along with all the animals in his life, especially Suzy, Shelley and Indy. Being part of a large Italian fishing family, he enjoyed fresh seafood and living his entire life by the Pacific Ocean. He is survived by his daughter, Carrie Ann and son-in-law, Timothy Rettberg; his only two grandchildren, Nicqueline and Luc; sisters in-law, Dolores Guglielmo, Mary (Mike) Dzida, Rose (Bernard) Lamoureux; brother-in-law, Vern Sedig; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Papa Joe loved his grandchildren with all of his heart. He was Nono to his beloved Nicqueline, and he was Papa to Luc. He was the light in their life, and brought them so much joy and laughter, and many memories everyday, and forever more.
