Longtime resident of Carson, entered the Church Triumphant on September 7, 2013. She was born to John Emil and Esther Eleanor Eastman on January 4, 1916 in Hinckley, Minnesota, and grew up in Duluth. She attended school there and graduated from Denfeld High School in June of 1934. She entered the State Teachers College (later, the University of Minnesota, Duluth), in 1936. She received her B.S. degree in English in 1940. She taught high school in Michigan and the Duluth area. In 1942 she married John Leroy Marshall. The couple moved to Los Angeles where John already resided. She and her husband raised three children. She was an involved mother, participating in her church, PTA, Brownies and Cub Scouts. She continued her involvement with children by becoming an educational aide at Catskill Avenue Elementary School from September of 1973 to June of 1999. Orlene lost her beloved husband on September 22, 1977. In retirement, she traveled to Hawaii, Germany and France. She went on numerous cruises to Alaska, Mexico and the Caribbean. She visited friends and family in Minnesota frequently and she enjoyed dancing at Buck Owens' Crystal Palace in Bakersfield. In Orlene's last several years her travels were curtailed by failing health. She was preceded to Heaven by her husband, her parents and sisters, Hazel and Virginia. Orlene is survived by her children, John, James, and Patricia; grandchildren, Sean Marshall, his wife Andrea, Christine Holliday, and Deborah Zuchero; nephews and nieces David and Judy Pearson, Barton, Ross, and Sally Sutter. In addition, she leaves great-grandchildren Sean, Aaron, Angel and Svanna Marshall; Jonathan, Jaime, and Tianna (Patton-) Holliday; great-great grandchildren Aleah, Charlie, Rabekah, Jacob, Daniel, and Haylee. Orlene was the definition of "Minnesota nice." She enjoyed people and made friends easily, endearing herself to everyone she met. She sang and danced as long as she had the strength to do so. "She will be missed" doesn't quite convey the sense of loss felt by her family and friends. A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 14, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1350 W. 25th St., San Pedro with burial to follow at Green Hills Memorial Park.
