Theresa P. Fontenette, known by most as Mama T or Tee, was born May 28, 1929, in Lafayette, Louisiana to Morris and Septima Peron. She attended the Notre Dame schools in St. Martinville, Louisiana and graduated from Rock Castle College in Virginia.

She married Henry Fontenette in 1951; to this union, five children were born. Theresa worked for the City of Austin and retired after more than 40 years. Prior to her work at the City of Austin Health Department, she was a kindergarten teacher at Matthews Elementary School.

Theresa was an active member of her parish for over 50 years. She was involved in the following ministries: A well trained Sacristan, Altar Rosary Society, Usher, Bazaar Committee, Finance Council, Church Secretary, Family Life and AIDS Care Team.

After attending the National Black Catholic Congress in Washington, DC with Theresa and others from Holy Cross Parish in 1987, Bishop John McCarthy appointed her as the first Diocese of Austin Director of the Office of Black Catholics. After she served as Director, she became a member of the Office of Black Catholics Advisory Board. T

Theresa was also very involved in the community and really cared about the status of East Austin, where she resided. She attended and actively participated in Austin Interfaith meetings, participated in voter registration drives, was an Elementary School mentor, conducted and participated in numerous food and clothes drives and donated blood at the Blood Bank.

Theresa was a Charter Member of Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary Court 284 for 30 years and a Charter Member Knights of Peter Claver Fourth Degree Chapter #40 for 21 years as a Gracious Lady.

She departed this life on Saturday, January 8, 2017 in Pflugerville, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Morris and Septima Peron, sister, Septima Peron and her son Craig Fontenette.

Theresa leaves to cherish her memory and legacy four devoted children: Kenneth Julius Fontenette, Sr. (Susan), of Pflugerville, Texas, Michelle Helene Fontenette, of Arlington, Texas Glen Michael Fontenette (Lisa), of Pflugerville, Texas and Kerry Daniel Fontenette, Sr. of Austin, Texas; her grandchildren: Christopher Baylor, Sr. (Andrea), Marquette Baylor-Bailey (Keith), Darcholcia Easley (Benere, III), Tyronza Prosser (LaRon), Anthony Robinson (Quisheia), Shawn Fontenette, Stefon Fontenette, Kerry Fontenette, II (Robin), Brandon Fontenette, Kenneth Fontenette, Jr. (Leslee), Ashleigh Fontenette, Gelisa "Miquella" Fontenette and Briana Benavides; great-grandchildren: Kwinton Baylor, Christopher Baylor, II, Brillian Fontenette, Zachary Bailey, Lillian and Alexis Baylor, LaRon Prosser, Jr., Breylan, Bryson and Barrett Easley, Brandon and Niquo Fontenette; sister, Edmonia Henderson, two God given sisters Connie and Denise Francis of Utah and a host of nieces, nephews and dear friends.
