Arvella Marie Toynes Slade was born June 29, 1928 in Austin, Texas at Seton Hospital. The oldest of five children, three brothers and one sister, who she was responsible for taking care of while her parents worked. Arvella was raised in the Chestnut Neighborhood area of Austin where she lived/owned her home at 1307 Singleton Ave, for over 60 years. Arvella also lovingly cared for her brother Floyd from 1982 until her transition to her Heavenly home early Monday morning, September 14, 2015.
Arvella was a graduate of the "Old" Anderson High School, and she identified her life's career as that of a "Domestic Engineer" where she cooked, cleaned and cared for children in private homes, as well as, Unified School Districts in Ogden, Utah and Austin, Texas.
Arvella married into the military to Dave Thomas a Marine Gunnery Sergeant and later to James W. Slade Jr., an Air Force Senior Master Sergeant. She had five sons who also served in the military.
Arvella was a community activist and neighborhood association pioneer. She worked tirelessly to help make the Chestnut community a safer, cleaner and more liveable place for those who reside there. A committed worker in the revitalization of the Chestnut neighborhood, she pushed for needs such as affordable housing, traffic signals, street lighting and neighborhood clean-up. She was a charter member of the Chestnut Neighborhood Revitalization Corporation (CNRC) and served as Vice-President for several years. Arvella co-chaired the Public Safety Committee of the CNRC along with another neighborhood advocate, Mrs. Scottie Ivory. She also served as Chestnut Addition Neighborhood Association, Vice President. Because of her community involvement, Arvella was frequently featured in the Austin American-Statesman newspaper. She was quoted by American-Statesman staff writer about menacing/unsafe driving through the neighborhood on Chestnut Ave: "It's Just amazing how fast these cars go. They're driving like a bat out of hell." Arvella was named "Austin Area Hero" for her community service in the Chestnut area.
Her walk as a Christian is embodied in the statement she often asked meeting participants to repeat at adjournment: "I'm not everybody; I'm just one-Can't do all things, but I can do some. That that I can do, God expects me to!"
Arvella Marie Toynes Slade was baptized at David Chapel MBC at the age of eight by Reverend S.L. Davis. She later joined Zion Hill MBC under the pastorate of Reverend Vernon McClure. Arvella later moved her membership back to David Chapel under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Dr. Joseph C. Parker, Jr., Esq., D. Min. At Zion Hill, she served as Chairperson of the Building Fund, President of the Mission Chorus and one of many loved church mothers. At David Chapel she was a member of the Platinum Plus Senior Adult Ministry and attended Sunday School.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Charlie Toynes, Neoma Bonner Toynes, two brothers, Charles Toynes, Eugene Toynes and her son Dave Leon Thomas.
To cherish her memory and carry out her legacy are her brother Floyd Toynes, Austin, TX; sister Daisy B. Williams, San Antonio, TX; four sons Gerry T. Slade, Germany; Dwight Thomas, Houston, TX; Darius J. Slade, Tacoma, WA; and Thurston L. Slade, Vacaville, CA; Fifteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren, three play-daughters Darlene Elder, Deborah Duncan Hurdle and Liz Pezoli, and a host of other relatives and friends.
