Dorotha "Baby Sister" Johnson Horton was born March 14, 1928 to the late Odell Johnson and the late Mary Mathews in Bastrop County, Hill Prairie, Texas. She was the 2nd oldest child of 10 children. Her parents and 7 siblings preceded her in death: Dorothy Primus Caruthers, Lawyer Dean Tucker, Bernadine Hamilton, Mary Andrews, Ruby Jones, Bobby Jean Johnson and Mack Johnson. She was also preceded in death by one grandchild, Joseph 'JoJo' Rangel, Jr.
She was united with Christ at an early age. She later united with Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor G. V. Clark. She retired from Luby's on North Loop after 28 years.
She was married to the late James Everett Hultz of Lawrence, Kansas, and gave birth to Shirley Hultz Jackson and Mary Hultz Houston. In 1960, she was united in marriage to the late James "Mumbo" Cornelius Horton.
Dorotha Horton departed this life on Tuesday, March 3, 2015. She leaves to cherish her memories: her 2 daughters, Shirley Hultz Jackson of Pflugerville, Texas and Mary Hultz Houston of Austin, Texas; 6 grandchildren: Bridget (Dominic) Archie, Andre (Eva) Rangel, Brittany (Chris) Jackson, David (Missy) Houston, Jr. and James Houston, all of Austin, Texas and Nicole (Leonard) Sandifer of Palestine, Texas; 15 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Hubert Johnson of Long Island, New York, and James Arthur Johnson of California.
Due to the ongoing renovation of King-Tears Mortuary, flowers may be delivered to Phillips Upshaw Richard Funeral home on Friday, March 13, 2015.
