Louis Goldstein, 96, a prominent Manchester businessman for more than 50 years, died Aug. 13, 2005, at Courville of Manchester Nursing Facility, Webster Street, of natuaral causes.

Family members include his wife od 71 years, Edith Goldstein, two sons, Arnold Goldstein of Bedford and David Goldstein of Manchester; a daughterBarbara John of Newton, Mass; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Goldstein had lived in Manchester since 1938, when he founded Martin’s Stores on Elm Street, the five –and –dime predecessor to the discount store. With just a $500 insurance policy and a few modest items for sale, he was able to expand the business to include such departments as drugs and cosmetics, hosiery, toys, men’s and ladies’ clothing, paint and hardware, floor coverings, domestics and fabrics. Additional units were opened in Concord, Nashua and Dover. While the flagship store burned to the ground in 1965 in a spectacular fire, the business continued as Martin’s hosiery and Martin’s House of Cloth under the management of Mr. Goldstein’s two sons, Martin’s House of Cloth is currently located in Bedford.

Mr. Goldstein, or Mr. “G.” as he was fondly known as by both employees and customers, was born in Lynn, Mass., in 1908, the seventh son Hannah and Israel Goldstein, recent immigrants from Russia, who came to America seeking religious freedom. A graduate of Lynn Classical High School, Mr. G. received his bachelor degree from the Rhode Island College of Pharmacy and became a registered pharmacist. In 1934, he married another Lynn resident, the former Edith Stryer, and together with his wife’s family, established Martin’s stores in Worcester, Mass. Before moving to the Queen City.

Mr. G. was known for his generosity, often handing monet to his customers or employees, who had experienced some of life’s misfortunes, no questions asked. He loved people, had a wonderful sense of humor, and was a beloved presence in Elm Street for many years. He also was an avid reader, with a command of the classics, but loved the New York Times most of all, especially the columnist, James Reston. With help from his wife, Edith, he was able to complete the N.Y.Times almost every day, including Sunday.

Mr. G. was a devoted environmentalist and enjoyed hiking and walking with his dogs Rembrandt, Freckles and Jingles, even in the bitterest cold of winter. Bear Brook State Park was a favorite locale. Next to walking in the woods, peanut butter and molasses were the things closest to his heart. He was a lifelong member of Temple Adath Yeshuren, an enthusiastic supporter of Israel and Israeli causes, and a founding member of the J.A.Y.S. (Jewish American Youth Social ) a fraternal social club.

SERVICES; There were no calling hours. A graveside service was held Monday August 15, 2005 in Manchester Hebrew Cemetery, Rabbi Beth D. Davidson of Temple Adath Yeshuren officiated. Memorials may be sent to the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests or to the Jewish Federation of New Hampshire.
