Martin Anthony Anker, 85, of Lynden Washington, went home to his Lord and Savior Sunday, April 19, 2015 at Lynden Manor. He was born to Jacob and Wilmpje Anker on March 15, 1930, in Woubrugge, Netherlands. After completing his agricultural schooling, Martin served two years in the Royal Dutch Air Force. In 1954, Martin married Janet Angenent and together they immigrated to Lynden, Washington, to pursue his dream of being a dairy farmer. They farmed over 38 years and raised their four children. Martin was very involved in his church as elder, deacon, and sunday school teacher. He served on the boards of Cascade Christian Home and Ebenezer Christian School. And his retirement, he volunteered for Friends of LC helping collect cardboard. Martin was passionate about making sure people were given the opportunity to know Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior even as he battled Alzheimer's.
Martin is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Janet; four children, Jacob (Valerie) Anker, Harry (Darlene) Anker, Stanley (Heather) Anker all of Lynden, and Pat (Greg) Heemstra of Rock Valley, Iowa; 12 grandchildren Niesje (Eric) VanZee, Lia (Cole) Reynolds, Dirk Anker, Brian Anker, Cynthia Anker, Tyler Rouse, Anthony Anker, and Simon Anker, Marcus Heemstra, Joanna Heemstra, Bryce Heemstra, and Abby Heemstra; sister Bep (Chris) Van Wingerden; Maarten (Fem) Angenent, Gerrit (Reit) Angenent, Henk (Claar) Angenent, Annie Angenent, Lia (Ewout) Kuiper all of the Netherlands.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Wilmpje Anker; brother Gerrit Anker; sister-in-law Marry Anker; and brother-in-law Wim Angenent.
Martin's visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 pm, Thursday, April 23, 2015 at Gillies Funeral Home. His memorial service will be 2:00 pm, Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Faith Reformed Church in Lynden, Washington. Family burial will precede the service at Monumenta Cemetery in Lynden. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Lynden Christian School/ Friends of LC, 417 Lyncs Dr.; Lynden, WA 98264 or to Faith Reformed Church, 300 7th St., Lynden, WA 98264.
