Barteld "Bart" Maarhuis, age 88, was born on March 27, 1926 and died on March 23, 2015 at the Christian Health Care Center. He was the second of five children born from Adolf and Luikje Maarhuis in Wirdum, the Netherlands.
After WWII, at the age of 20, he left Holland and came to the United States and lived in Lynden. On April 24, 1950, at the age of 24, he married Winnie Tjoelker. At 27 years of age, he worked for various farmers before farming on his own. At age 36, Bart moved to Sumas in 1962 and bought his own farm and raised five children there. After his retirement in 1984, Bart enjoyed traveling and time with his many friends playing pool and golf and also doing woodworking projects for charity.
Bart is survived by his wife Winnie of 64 years; and his children Nettie (Denny) Bos, Ken ( Jopie) Maarhuis, Peggy (Chuck) Berendsen, Jack (Kelly) Maarhuis, and John (Laurie) Maarhuis; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Rika Beukema and Ida Snip and their families of the Netherlands; sister-in-law Norma Maarhuis and her family; brothers and sisters-in-law Henry (Marie) Tjoelker, George (Geri) Tjoelker, Bert (Ruth) Tjoelker, Bill (Carol) Tjoelker, Frieda Van Dyk, Alice Hazenberg, and Gerald (Janie) Glass.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Roelf and Berend "Ben" Maarhuis and brothers-in-law Art Van Dyk, Pete Hazenberg and John Tjoelker.
A private Graveside Service is Friday, March 27, 2015 at Monumenta Cemetery followed by a 11:00 am Memorial Service at Sumas Christian Reformed Church, 700 Sumas Ave., Sumas, WA. Memorials may be sent to Seeds of Hope Ministries, P.O. Box 791 Sumas, WA 98295.
