Our beloved wife, mother and grandmother Dorothy Jean Rasmussen, age 70 of Lynden, passed away suddenly of a brain hemorrhage on Friday, March 20, 2015. She was born February 8, 1945 in Sumas to John and Johanna (Roosma) Dykman. Dorothy moved to the Lynden area at a very young age and lived in the Wiser Lake area her entire life. She graduated from Lynden Christian High School in 1963 and not long after, met Robert Rasmussen on a blind date as he was stationed at the Air Force base in Blaine. They were married in 1965 and over the next 10 years had 4 children. Dorothy was a lifelong member of Second Christian Reformed Church, active in Bible studies and served in many aspects of the church's ministries. She had a gentle generous spirit and her life was dedicated to caring for her family, friends and others in the community. Her home was always open for a cup of coffee and cookies to anyone who stopped by. Sending cards, notes and packages was part of her daily routine.
Bob and Dorothy would usually be found working together in their beautiful yard and garden. They were quick to take a day trip, especially to sit on the beach at Semiamhoo, drive to the coast to see the sunset or go antique hunting.
When not busy with her yard, Dorothy was usually entertaining grandkids with games, baking and crafts or off at a sporting event or concert they were involved in. Her shelves are lined with meticulously organized photo albums of all the daily events of her grandkids and family or trips they took together. She kept detailed records of family genealogy which was an interest of hers.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 49 years Bob; and children Kathy (John) Gerrits, Jim (Carrie) Rasmussen, Dave (Julie) Rasmussen, and Susan (Kevin) Berendsen. Also grandchildren Caleb and Kevlyn Gerrits; Justin (Summer), Nathan, Colton, Austin, Ashlyn, and Cayden Rasmussen; Lucya, Eva and Marcos Rasmussen; Brooke and Tessa Berendsen. She will be missed by her sibilings Bern (Diane) Dykman, John (Melissa) Dykman, and Sandi (Leroy) Kornelis; and much extended family.
Memorials may be made to Lynden Christian Schools, 417 Lyncs Drive, Lynden, WA 98264 or your favorite charity. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 pm., Monday, March 30, 2015 at Gillies Funeral Home. A Graveside Committal will be 1:15 pm, Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at Monumenta Cemetery followed by a 2:00 pm, Memorial Service at Second Christian Reformed Church, 710 Front St., Lynden.
