Georgia A. Smith, age 101, died peacefully at the Christian Health Care Center Saturday morning, March 7, 2015. Georgia was born February 9, 1914 to George and Ethel (Umbrell) Loomis in Olga, on Orcas Island. She was the first of two daughters. Georgia attended a one room school house through the 8th grade then was transported by bus to Eastsound for high school. Through her high school summers, she attended the Firs Bible and Missionary Conference Center, giving her heart to the Lord – a significant and blessed event. After graduation in 1933, Georgia attended Normal School in Bellingham (WWU), and business and beauty schools. Her parents then moved to Bellingham where they attended First Presbyterian Church on Garden Street. Georgia was active in Sunday school, choir, and Christian Endeavor (a youth program) where she met Bill from Lynden.
They married in 1941, and Bill was drafted into the Army for a year, but was detained for 5 years to be trained as a mechanic when the war broke out. Georgia moved back to Orcas Island with her parents and it was during that time their first child was born.
When Bill came home, they lived on the island for a few years before moving to Lynden in 1950. Bill owned an auto body shop both on the island and in Lynden. They attended First Reformed Church where Georgia was active in the Church's Youth program, Choir, and Women's Ministries.
Georgia is preceded in death by her husband of 45 years Bill; son Donald Smith; sister Lyla Abraham; and foster brother Larry Elder.
Georgia is survived by her children Craig (Deborah) Smith of San Diego and Ethel (Ed) VanBeek of Lynden; daughter-in-law Nyla Smith; 9 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 7 great great-grandchildren.
