Life-time Lynden resident, Jennie DeGroot, age 86, went to be with her Heavenly Father at her home on Wednesday, April 17.
Born July 18, 1926, Jennie was the daughter of Bert and Lena (VanWeerthuizen) VanderPloeg and grew up on a dairy farm on the Beard Road. She married John DeGroot on September 25, 1945 and together raised their family and operated a dairy farm on the Hampton Road. A home maker, Jennie enjoyed gardening, music and baking and for many years baked pies for the Fairway Café in Lynden. She was a member of the Lynden Assembly of God Church (now City Bible Church - North Sound) where she was one of the church's organists for many years.
Besides her parents, Jennie was preceded in death by her husband John in April 2007; daughter Anna Mae Succa in Oct. 2004; sister Lena Lankhaar and brother Marinus VanderPloeg. She is survived by her children William (Kathy) Basaar of Burlington; Marlene Smith, Burton (Julie) DeGroot and Sharon (Barry) VanBeek all of Lynden; thirteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; one which was born on the day of her passing. She is also survived by her sisters, Alice (Joe) Hoekema, Ruth (Jerry) Weidenaar and Esther (Norman) TeSelle of Lynden and Bunny Korthuis of Sedro Woolley and numerous other relatives.
Visitation hours will be from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 25 at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden.
Burial will be on Friday, April 26, at 1:15 p.m. in Monumenta Cemetery followed by memorial funeral services at 2:00 p.m. in First Reformed Church; 6th & Grover Streets, Lynden.
