On Thursday, October 15, 2015, God decided in His infinite wisdom and mercy to have our father, Stewart W. Pogue, Sr. exchange time for eternity.
Stewart W. Pogue, Sr. was born on March 9, 1938 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He was the youngest son of Henry W. and Mamie E. Pogue who preceded him in death.
"Stu" resided in the Roselle area for most of his life. He was educated in the Roselle Public School System where he graduated from Abraham Clark High School in 1956. He attended Shaw University in Raleigh North Carolina where he majored in Business Education and played football. An injury at Shaw caused his scholarship to be cut. In 1957 he joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey and later in Germany. In 1959 he received an Honorable Discharge.
Upon his return from the Service, Stewart was employed by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. While employed as a toll collector, he extended kindness to a moneyless motorist who discovered he had left his wallet at home. He loaned the driver the 25 cents. Stewart later received a letter of thanks and an invitation for a favor from the motorist who turned out to be the Vice President of Summit-Elizabeth Trust Co., Charles J. Walker.
A few months later he contacted Mr. Walker and after taking a series of test he started his career in the banking field. Stewart started out in the bookkeeping department, advanced through several posts and was then promoted to Assistant Manager. He later worked his way up to Vice-President of Summit-Elizabeth Trust Co. and First National Bank of Central Jersey in Roselle, NJ. Later he would attend and graduate from European Cosmetology School in Union, New Jersey.
Stewart was very concerned about the youth in Roselle. He would spend his off-duty hours coaching and working with youngsters in the Roselle Community. He was one of the organizers of the Roselle Pop Warner Football Program Inc. and served as the President of the organization.
Stewart was an avid golfer and chess player. He was a New York Knicks and Giants fan and was a season ticket holder for many years. He also tried his hand at politics running for Councilman-at-Large in Roselle.
He was a member of Heard A.M.E. Church in Roselle and later joined the Mount Erie Missionary Baptist Church in Jamesburg, New Jersey.
Stewart was preceded in death by his brother Albert Pogue and son Stewart W. Pogue, Jr.
Stewart is survived by his two sons, Rev. Dr. Stephen Pogue (Iris) of Mount Vernon, NY, Kevin Pogue (LaShawn) of Palm Coast, FL; his three daughters, Marci Pogue-Hodges of Rahway, NJ, Monica Pogue of Linden, NJ and Kerry Napoleon of Roselle, NJ; one brother, Ernest Pogue of Roselle, NJ; two sisters, Elizabeth Bragg (Randolph) of Roselle, NJ, and Thelma Wilson of Rahway, NJ; seventeen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to St. Paul's Calvary UCOG Building Fund in his name.
