Mary E. Smith was a woman of great faith who dedicated her life to caring for the poor, sick and elderly. She passed away at Melrose Care Center in Melrose on Sept. 22nd at the age of 84. Mary was born in Boston, raised in Brighton, graduated from Harvard University and received her Masters from Bunker Hill Community College. She worked as a secretary for the President of Tufts University for many years, at St. John’s Prep. in Danvers as a secretary & teacher and worked part time as a secretary at Malden Catholic High School. Mary has been a longtime resident of Melrose, a member of Incarnation Church in Melrose, a member of the 3rd Order of St. Francis and she was very generous to the Xaverian Brothers and numerous catholic organizations. Mary was the daughter of the late Frank M. & Katherine E. (Carnes) Smith. Sister of Clare Micchelli of TX, Marsella Littlefield, Ellen Conley both of ME, Rosemary O’Brien, Edward J. Smith both of FL, Brother James Smith CFX of CA, Paul Smith of Lancaster, Joseph Smith of MD and the late Ruth, Francis, Catherine Smith, Louise Isaac, Dorothy Smith, Marjorie Fitzgerald and Sister Rosamond Smith RSM. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Monday Sept. 27th, at 9AM. Funeral Mass in The Church of the Incarnation, 425 Upham St. Melrose, at 10AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Sunday 2-5PM. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden.
