Ralph E. Chaffee, Sr., 85, of Baldwinville and formerly of Fitchburg, died peacefully Sunday March 27, 2016 in Baldwinville Nursing Home surrounded by his family.

Ralph was born in Calais, Maine, April 1, 1930, a son of the late John W. and Bernice (McKnight) Chaffee. His beloved wife Myrtie M. (Newell) Chaffee died December 30, 2007.

Ralph is a United States Army Veteran, proudly serving during the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the National Defense Medal, the United States Service Medal, and two overseas bars. Ralph also served in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary for many years. Ralph was a transmission specialist, and he worked for Clapham's Transmissions for over 30 years. He was a long time member of the Fitchburg Sportsmans Club, a member of the Lt. Roger P. Warfield American Legion Post 373 of Baldwinville, and the Aurora Lodge Grand Lodge of Masons in Fitchburg. When he was younger, Ralph enjoyed fishing. He enjoyed boating, restoring boats and building boats.

Ralph will be missed by his three children; Ralph E. Chaffee, Jr. and his wife Louise of Templeton, Gary P. Chaffee and his wife Stephanie of Fitchburg, and Theresa D. Chaffee-Veroneau and her wife Carrie of Worcester, three brothers; Gerald Chaffee of Florida, Phillip "Bud" Chaffee of Calais, Maine, and John W. Chaffee Jr., of Arrowsic, Maine, two sisters; Jean Johnson of Robinston, Maine, and Joan Yates of St. Petersburg, Florida, thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Ralph was predeceased by one son; Albert "Al" Chaffee in 2000.

You are invited to attend visiting hours in the Lamoureux Fletcher and Smith Funeral Home, on Friday April 1, 2016 from 9:30-11AM. His funeral service will be in the funeral home at 11AM. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Glenallen St., Winchendon. The family would like to extend a warm thank you to the entire staff at Baldwinville Nursing Home, for the their kind and dedicated care of Ralph. In liue of flowers, donations may be made to the Baldwinville Nursing Home, Residents Activities Fund, 51Hospital Rd., Baldwinville, MA 01436.
