Charles L. and Lila A. (Donaway) Hallquist, of Baldwinville, died peacefully Wednesday June 5, 2013 and June 7, 2013, respectively, in Baldwinville Nursing Home, both surrounded by their loving family.
Charles and Lila were married January 14, 1950, and together they shared over 63 years of marriage and were reunited in heaven just 36 hours apart.
Charles was born in Athol December 29, 1921, son of the late Conrad T. and Bessie I. (Nelson) Hallquist. Lila was born in Winchendon October 20, 1920 daughter of the late Arthur C. and Sarah M. (Allen) Donaway. Together they lived in Baldwinville for many years.
Charles is a 1939 graduate of Athol High School. Lila was a 1938 graduate of Murdock High School. Charles proudly served his country with the United States Army Air Corp during WWII, flying 35 missions over Germany. He worked for General Electric for 23 years, retiring in 1985. Lila worked for the DPW in Winchendon as a bookkeeper retiring in 1970. After her retirement she worked for the Superintendent of the Winchendon School District for an additional 5 years. Charles was a member of the Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion of Winchendon and both he and Lila were members of the Ashburnham Community Church. Charles was also a member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society and the 385th Bomb Group Association. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and hunting. Lila enjoyed cooking, sewing, and knitting. Most of all Charles and Lila enjoyed spending time together and with their family and friends.
Lila and Charles will be sadly missed by 3 children; Alan C. Hallquist and his wife Laurie of Winchendon, Neal A. Hallquist and his fiancée Lorie Butler of Phillipston, and Brenda L. Berg and her husband Ronald of Fitzwilliam, 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and Lila's sister Nada L. Foster of Rindge, NH. They were predeceased by Charles' two sisters; Lillian A. Miller and Violet C. Peterson, and Lila's two brothers; Alexander Donaway and Maurice Donaway, and Lila's two sisters; Evelyn E. Rice and Carol V. Thompson.
Relatives and friends are planning to honor and celebrate the lives of Charles and Lila by gathering for their funeral service in the Fletcher-Hebert Funeral Home, 70 Pleasant St. Winchendon, on Thursday June 13, 2013 beginning at 11AM. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Glenallen St., Winchendon. A calling hour will be held in the funeral home on Thursday June 13, 2013 from 10AM until the start of the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Charles' memory may be made to the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum, B17 Restoration Project, PO Box 1992, Savannah, GA 31402, www.mightyeighth.org and donations in Lila's memory may be made to the ASPCA, Memorial/Honor Giving, 520 Eighth Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10018.
