William Billy Sloane

William(Billy) Sloane of West Orange, NJ, 52 departed this life on Thursday, April 19, 2012. Born December 26, 1959, he spent most of his childhood in the West Chester, Pennsylvania area and then relocated to the Orange, New Jersey and the Manhattan, New York area after he graduated from college. He was the son of Isabel Sloane and the late Shedrick Sloane.

From the time Billy was a young child, he loved sports. As a youngster, he played baseball for the Eastside Little League team and football for the Little All American Football Association (LAFA). Continuing his passion for sports, Billy played basketball for Vineland Senior High School in Vineland, New Jersey and was named All –State Point Guard. After graduating from high school, he played one year of college basketball at Cheyney University coached by the renowned Coach John Chaney. Clearly, Billy was a committed sportsman in his early life.

Billy's devotion and commitment not only in the area of sports, transcended into his love for education. While attending Cheyney University, he served as vice president of the Political Science Club, Senior Class President, member of the Commonwealth Association of Students, Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, Alpha Phi Sigma and valedictorian of the 1981 graduating class. After graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Cheyney University in 1981, Billy continued to pursue education by attending New York University School of Law. While attending New York University School of Law, he received the Vanderbilt Medal for Outstanding Service to New York University and the Senior Award for Outstanding Service from the Black Allied Law Students Association. Billy graduated from the New York University School of Law in 1984.

As a lawyer, Bill started his career at the Brooklyn District Attorney's office. A few years later, he took a position at Carter Ledyard and Milburns's Law Offices and became the firm's first African American partner in 1993. He devoted 23 years of service to the firm and retired in 2010. After retirement, he continued to work with various organizations and served on many law committees.

Bill will always be remembered for his vibrant laugh and being the "life of the party".
We will sadly miss him and will never forget all of his favorite and famous sayings when he was ready to have fun by calling out "Jay Zee."

Bill leaves behind his wife, Jacqueline Sloane; children, Brittany and Amir Bryant; six brothers, Leonard R. Sloane, Jeffrey Thomas, James Sloane, Chickie Sloane, Matthew Sloane, Russell Sloane; two sisters, Georgina and Jolene Sloane and a host of loving relatives and friends.
