MILLER, SR., ELI MICHAEL SEGAN, 82, of Miller Road, Lafferty, Ohio, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at his home. he was born July 31, 1920, at New Lafferty, Ohio, a son of the late Mike Segan Miller and Josephine Grudowski Miller Skukan.
Eli was a retired farmer and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Lafferty, Lafferty VFD, Lafferty Community Park and National Farmers Organization.
Eli graduated from Lafferty School and attended Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio and was in the 3 C's in Libby, Montana. He also played independent basketball for the Home Restaurant of Cadiz and the Green Raiders in 1948, plus many local baseball, softball and bowling teams. His life history is of a good and giving man, for example, Eli, Fr. Carl Borosh and Joe "Friday" Bizzarri decided that Lafferty needed a VFD, so they started one, then Eli decided that Lafferty needed a community park, so he established one and he will also be remembered for the famous Miller's Pond. He was an avid sportsman and farming was his life.
He loved his family and friends and this was his tribute of what a man should be.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Eli Miller, Jr. in 1975; his Uncle Rade Popovoch; one half-brother, Jack Skukan, Sr., three half-sisters; Rose Binkley, Ann Luxiel and Mary Menough, and one niece; Phyllis Menough.
Surviving are his wife Nancy Smokovich Miller of Lafferty, Ohio, one son; Eugene Miller of the home, two daghters; Suz Pubal and her husband Ken of Belmont, Ohio and Linda Phillips and her husband Christopher of Pewaukee, WI., six grandchildren; Kalyn and Derek Pubal of Belmont, Ohio, Olivia and Erin Phillips of Pewaukee, WI., Jennifer Gardner and her husband Bob of St. Clairsville, Ohio, Paul Pubal of Columbus, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will received on Thursday from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM, at the Beck-Altmeyer Funeral Home, 204 West Main street, St. Clairsville, Ohio. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00 AM, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Lafferty, Ohio, with Father Chester Pabin as the celebrant. Burial follows in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lafferty, Ohio. A vigil service will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
